Award Ceremony BBDC 2021

We cordially invite you to the award ceremony of the Bremen Big Data Challenge 2021! The ceremony, including an exciting talk by U Bremen Exzellenz Chair Prof. Haizhou Li on the Cocktail Party Effect, takes place via Zoom on the 28th of May 2021 from 10:30 to 12:00 am.

The Bremen Big Data Challenge is an annual programming competition focused on data analysis in which students from Bremen and the surrounding area can compete with each other. In this year’s challenge, the students detected acoustic events like the meowing of a cat or the ringing of a bell, in addition to determining the start and endpoints of the event correctly. The task was made more difficult by different background noises in the audio recordings.

The five best teams of this year’s challenge will be honored on the 28th of May 2021. Thanks to the sponsors “neuland, Büro für Informatik” and “die Sparkasse Bremen”, a total of 1500 euros of prize money will be awarded. The ceremony starts at 10:30 am with an introduction by the hosts, the Dekan for Mathematics and Computer Science, Prof. Rolf Drechsler, as well as the sponsors. Next, Prof. Haizhou Li will give us a glimpse into his research. Awarding the winners their prizes will be the highlight of the event. The event will end around 12:00 am.

We are happy to announce that Prof. Haizhou Li will give a presentation on his current research. Prof. Li teaches and researches at the National University Singapore (NUS) and is U Bremen Excellence Chair in the high-profile area “Minds, Media, Machines”. In his talk, “Auditory attention by humans and machines”, he will give us a glimpse into his current work on selective attention and the Cocktail Party Effect. His biography, title, and abstract of the talk are attached below.

We thank all the participants and everyone interested in the BBDC 2021 and are looking forward to welcoming you to the award ceremony!

Title: Auditory attention by humans and machines

Abstract: Humans have a remarkable ability to pay their auditory attention only to a sound source of interest in a multi-talker environment, i.e., cocktail party. However, auditory attention in multi-talker environment remains a challenge for machines. In this talk, we discuss the recent studies where we apply machine learning techniques to interpret listening activities in human brains, and to implement machine auditory attention.

Biography: Haizhou Li is currently a Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). Prof. Li’s research interests include speech information processing, natural language processing, and human-machine interface. Prof. Li has served as the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing (2015-2018), the President of the International Speech Communication Association (2015-2017), the President of Asia Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (2015-2016). Prof. Li is a Fellow of the IEEE, and a Fellow of ISCA. He was named a U Bremen Excellence Chair Professor in 2019 by Bremen University.
