Dr. Prof. Tanja Schultz, Head of the Cognitive Systems at the University of Bremen, has co-authored a new article in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, the world’s leading journal on infectious disease research.

The article is part of a three-part series exploring how artificial intelligence will transform healthcare. It shows how AI can be applied to:

  • Detect outbreaks at an early stage
  • Model disease progression
  • Optimize public health measures
  • Accelerate drug development and repurposing

The publication also highlights critical challenges for AI in healthcare, such as fragmented data, lack of clinical validation, and unresolved questions around data protection and regulation.

Together with co-authors Anna Odone, Chiara Barbati, Silvia Amadasi, and David B. Resnik, Prof. Tanja Schultz contributes expertise from computer science. In addition, she provides explanatory info boxes on AI concepts such as machine learning, deep learning, and computational linguistics to make the work accessible to an interdisciplinary audience.

Congratulations to Prof. Tanja Schultz on this outstanding contribution and international recognition!
